KAREN HORNE – THOUGHTS ON THE SALT LAKE CITY SERIES
When I moved back to SLC from Manhattan in the late 1990s, I began observing that there were numerous Utah artists painting the landscape, but many fewer celebrating the dynamism and beauty of our urban landscape. Coming from an urban mecca, I was inspired to capture SLC’s own urban scene. This includes its landmarks and gathering places – not just the architecture, streets, and parks but the way certain places served as a energy hub for people. This led to an ongoing series depicting downtown, 9th and 9th landmarks, Liberty and Fairmont parks, local restaurants, theatres as well the glittering crowds of the Utah Arts Festival, I was fortunate and thrilled to be honored with the award in 2013, for the series and our service to the community through the gallery. Today I remain fascinated with the subject of cityscapes.
